Autumn - How can you support yourself during this transitional phase?

In both hemisphere’s we have just passed through the Equinox. This is a point of transition for our planet and our energies. A time of equal day and equal night, the balance of light and dark. There are only two times per year when this event occurs, when the Earth's axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the sun, resulting in a "nearly" equal amount of daylight and darkness, unlike a Solstice where the opposite occurs and we have two extremes. And so at this time of Equinox we have an opportunity to invite balance into our lives. We have an opportunity to reflect upon the light and dark in ourselves and understand that they are valid in equal measures.

Until the eighteenth century, this Equinox was considered by many cultures to mark the start of the new astrological year, when people would perform rituals to cleanse out old energy in both themselves and in their homes. You may like to use Palo Santo (as shown below) or White Sage. Clearing yourself and your home in a simple smoking ceremony. Using a simple intention during the smoking, such as “Cleansing and clearing any energies or entities that do not serve in the highest good of myself or my family”, can make your clearing more intentional and powerful.

“Cleansing and clearing any energies or entities that do not serve in the highest good of myself or my family.”

Autumn is a wonderful time of energetic opportunity!

In the Southern hemisphere we are transitioning into Autumn months. A period of cooling and slowing down as we head toward the dormancy of winter. Combine the Equinox with the energy and meaning of Autumn and we have prefect conditions for releasing and letting go, shedding that which no longer serves us. Identifying what can bring us back to balance. It is always important to set your intentions for the season ahead, in line with the seasonal energy. In Autumn we can ask ourselves:

  • What in your life is in it’s Autumn phase?

  • What leaves are you ready to shed? Do you need to release people, things, relationships in order for you to rest, restore and grow?

  • What can be harvested? Is it time to acknowledge the fruits of your labour?

  • What have you lost from your crop? Is there something or someone you need to recognise and grieve for?

  • What has to be given up or allowed to transition in order for you to reach your goals?

During Autumn everywhere in nature, we see, feel and hear the energy transitioning, slowing down, releasing, preparing for rest. And so we have the opportunity to consciously align with this energy. Just like nature, we cannot be in full bloom all year round. Whether your are paying attention to it or not you are part of the Earth, part of the cycle of the seasons, and will be influenced by this energy. If you pay some attention, you may feel it, and if you feel it you can flow with it.

Autumn invites us to see beauty in transitioning. The beauty of the changing colours of leaves before they drop to the ground.

Kinesiology, TCM and The Metal element - what does it mean for you?

In Kinesiology I work with the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) model and in this ancient wisdom Autumn is housed in the Metal element. The Metal element is symoblised by amour, protection, and shiny hard surfaces. So let’s question the metaphysical significance of this and what it might mean in your life:

  • Do you need a ‘hard shell, barriers or boundaries to protect yourself? Or on the flip side do you need to be more open, let down your shield to allow people in?

  • Are you too hard or not hard enough on yourself or others?

  • Are you too focused on appearances or frequently distracted by shiny new things?

The emotion of the Metal element is Grief. If you feel grief, that’s not necessarily a bad thing…

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the emotion associated with Metal is Grief. In western culture we are conditioned to the think that grief is negative and it has largely been lost a cultural concept. We are often told to '“get over it”, or “move on” but grief is part of the cycle and just like the seasons emotions are cyclical. Grief is an important phase of any healing process. In order to ‘move on’ we must first be able to recognise the pain and loss and accept what we can ‘get over’ and what we must accept as an ongoing part of our lives. This takes time. In clinic I frequently encounter people who have been suppressing grief, often for many years. They have been putting on a ‘brave face’, a ‘hard shell’, and this can prevent you from moving forward in life, keeping you stuck in the past or in a place of fear, even anger and rage and with this your body remains in a place of imbalance, exposing you to physical pain or ‘dis-ease’. Feeling grief is important and natural.

  • Are you hiding or suppressing grief/putting on a mask, a ‘brave face’ or a ‘hard shell’ to survive?

  • What has hurt you, or have you lost that you need to recognise and grieve for?

  • What do you need to grieve over, and accept as part of your life, in order to move forward?

  • What has to be given up or let go of in order to reach your goals?

In Kinesiology I use many non invasive tools and techniques to balance the energy of the Meridian system and it’s associated organs and emotions. Kinesiology can be used to identify suppressed grief, gently supporting you to recognise it, access it and move forward with it.

The Lung and Large intestine in Kinesiology and TCM

In TCM the Metal element houses the Lung and the Large intestine. The Lungs are essential source of life energy, as well as an important channel of elimination. The Lung meridian is said to draw in or release Chi (life energy) and regulate Chi in the whole body and Soul.

The Large intestine is essential in the metabolism of water, absorbing it or sending waste on to the bladder and bowels. Both the large intestine and lung meridian are crucial in eliminating waste and toxins from the body. An imbalance in these meridians may result in physical, mental, or emotional toxicity.

  • Can you breathe /speak easily?

  • Do you need to cough something up?

  • Do you have free flowing fresh air to nourish yourself and your goals, or are you constricted? Literally or figuratively?

  • Are you holding onto things longer than necessary in your life?

  • Are you holding on to too many things and becoming overwhelmed/toxic?

  • What needs detoxifying in your life? Literally or figuratively?

  • What needs to be released or to let go of?

How can you support your Lung and Large intestine?

  • Drink plenty of water each day - at least 2 - 2.5 litres per day

  • Get outdoors into fresh clean air at least once per day

  • Move your body for a minimum of 20 minutes each day

  • Introduce a simple breathing practice to ensure you are taking full deep breaths into the Lungs and diaphragm (you can find plenty of these online)

  • Eat more fiber - oats, legumes, fruit, vegetables, seeds and nuts

  • Reduce high trans-fatty and processed foods

  • This is the perfect time of year to enjoy warm spiced Chai, both warming and calming on the nervous system.

Brew chai tea bags in your favourite heated plant based milk and mix with honey for an aromatic, creamy tea latte. Both warming and soothing to the nervous system. Chai tea is a fragrant, spicy tea that may help boost heart health.

I’m here to help…

Working with Kinesiology and Reiki I can assist you in restoring balance to your mind and body. To allow you to come into flow with the current energies of the seasons.

Reiki restores balance to the whole being. Although balance can mean different things in different circumstances, Reiki typically brings rapid stress reduction and relief from pain and anxiety. Reiki takes you out of the overactive fight or flight mode, soothing your nervous system and restoring balance rather than targeting a particular issue or symptom.

Using Kinesiology we can work together using muscle testing to identify what is happening beneath the surface. Using TCM model we can work with the energy pathways of the body to release blocked, stagnant energy and undigested emotions. We can move you away from what you don’t want and toward what you do want, physically, mentally and emotionally. Using Kinesiology we can bring you into alignment with your goals and intentions in any area of your life, removing sub-conscious self limiting beliefs, conditioning and programming.
